Bhaktapur: Sujan Bag Shrestha, a 28-year-old resident of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-8, continued his family’s age-old tradition by piercing his tongue on Sunday, marking the second time he has done so.
For more than two decades, Sujan’s family has been participating in the tradition of tongue piercing during the Biska Jatra festival. His father, Buddha Krishna, has pierced his tongue nine times, while his uncle, Krishna Chandra, has done so twelve times.
The tongue-piercing ritual is a significant part of the Biska Jatra festivities, observed on the second day of the Nepali month of Baisakh (which fell on April 14 this year), signifying the commencement of the Nepali New Year.
