Kathmandu, Nepal, November 8, 2024 – WWF Nepal and the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE) have signed a pivotal agreement to support Nepal’s climate action goals by enhancing the nation’s transparency framework under the Paris Agreement. The newly launched project, titled “Building National Capacities of Nepal to Meet Requirements of the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement,” aims to bolster Nepal’s ability to track, report, and assess its climate commitments known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
With a substantial USD 2.84 million budget, this three-year initiative receives key funding support from the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) Fund, managed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Of the total, the GEF will contribute USD 1.65 million, with MoFE and WWF Nepal providing additional in-kind co-financing of USD 1 million and USD 0.19 million, respectively.
Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung, WWF Nepal’s Country Representative, underscored the project’s significance: “This partnership is an important step towards building a more resilient and transparent climate governance system in Nepal. By strengthening national capacities, we are empowering Nepal to achieve its climate targets and contribute meaningfully to global climate action.”
The project’s goals include enhancing Nepal’s greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring and reporting systems across key sectors such as agriculture, forestry, energy, industry, and waste management. Improved data collection, analysis, and verification will strengthen Nepal’s compliance with the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement, building a foundation of accountability and fostering international trust.
Mr. Badri Raj Dhungana, Joint Secretary and Division Chief at MoFE’s Planning, Monitoring, and Coordination Division, described the agreement as a “critical milestone” for Nepal’s climate strategy. “This project will significantly enhance our ability to track our progress and meet our NDC commitments, ensuring Nepal is accountable to its climate targets and building trust with the global community,” he noted.
As Nepal remains vulnerable to climate change impacts, the project stands to provide substantial benefits, equipping the nation with the tools to address climate challenges with transparency and resolve.
